Animal Food & Feeds
A safe animal food (feed) supply helps ensure healthy animals and people. To that end, the Center for Veterinary Medicine:
- reviews pre-market animal food ingredient submissions, including approving safe food additives for animal food use, evaluating generally recognized as safe (GRAS) notices, serving as the scientific review for Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO) feed ingredient definitions, reviewing biotech plant notifications, and reviewing animal food labels as well as pet foods with certain claims,
- manages the Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) oversight of animal food using a comprehensive inspectional and risk-based enforcement program,
- oversees monitoring and sampling programs in collaboration with state regulatory partners for animal food contaminants, including those in pet food,
- coordinates complaint, emergency response, and recalls related to animal food, and
- provides training, education, and outreach to help ensure effective implementation of regulatory programs.
