The volume and variety of foods imported into and exported from the United States has increased dramatically in recent years. The rules of international trade continue to change as they adjust to the world's economy. As a result, FDA has developed new strategies and assumed more responsibilities related to global food safety.

FDA also has in place multiple agreements with other U.S. government agencies—including the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)—to ensure clarity of jurisdiction and responsibilities.
