Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator (ICD) Implantation Limited Data Set

Overview of File: The Medicare national coverage determination (NCD) for implantable cardioverter defibrillators (ICDs) requires that providers implanting these devices for certain clinical indications enter the implant data in a clinical registry. CMS temporarily operated a registry to collect ICD implantation data from February 2005 to April 2006. The ICD Implantation Limited Data Set (LDS) contains information CMS collected while operating this registry.

The ICD Implantation LDS includes almost 45,000 records with each record representing a device implantation.  Each record contains approximately 60 data fields which include information about patient demographics, clinical history, clinical characteristics, device information, and the admission, implant and discharge dates. All records have been stripped of any direct patient identifiers.

In April 2006, the American College of Cardiology National Cardiovascular Data Registry’s (ACC-NCDR) ICD Registry took over as the CMS-mandated registry. More information on the ACC-NCDR ICD Registry is available on the ACC website (see Related Links section below).
