Background

Frederick A. Beland received a B.A. degree in biology from The Colorado College, and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in chemistry from Montana State University. Following postdoctoral work in the Ben May Laboratory at the University of Chicago, he was recruited by NCTR to continue his studies in cancer research. These studies, which are funded primarily by FDA/NCTR and the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences/National Toxicology Program, have resulted in over 350 publications.

Dr. Beland is an elected member of the American and European Associations for Cancer Research and the American Chemical Society. He has served on the program committee for the American Association for Cancer Research, on the Board of Directors for the Division of Chemical Toxicology, American Chemical Society, and as a member of the American Cancer Society and National Institutes of Health study sections. He has been a member of the International Agency for Research on cancer working groups to evaluate the carcinogenic risks to humans. He is the past editor of Cancer Letters, is currently a member of the editorial board for BMC Cancer, and has served as a reviewer for more than 30 scientific journals.

Research Interests

The focus of Dr. Beland's research has been to assess the carcinogenic potential of chemicals of interest to FDA and to understand the mechanisms responsible for the carcinogenic response. These investigations involve conducting chronic bioassays in experimental animals and conducting in vitro and in vivo mechanistic studies to determine if the responses observed in experimental animals are relevant to humans. An important component of these studies is the elucidation of dose-response relationships that can be used to guide risk assessments. Recent studies have focused on acrylamide, furan, anti-retroviral drugs (e.g., zidovudine and nevirapine), and inorganic arsenic.
