How did your career begin at FDA?
I began my career in 2009 as a program Analyst in the Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition (CFSAN). I applied for the position via USAJobs, with the help of friends, who were current federal employees, and they helped educate me on the federal job application process. I applied, was interviewed and hired within two months – considered quick turnaround in those days!

After I was hired, I continuously sought out training and professional development opportunities (including detail assignments in other FDA centers) that expanded my knowledge, skills, and abilities to both help my office as well as expand my opportunities for career advancement. I had a very supportive supervisor that was genuinely interested in my professional growth and advancement. One of the detail assignments included a staff director position in ORA Office of Partnerships in 2013. I was successful in the assignment, subsequently applied to the permanent position of which I was a detailee, and was hired. Over time, I helped the office earn several awards as well as earning my own certifications, including Project Management Professional (PMP) and graduate of the Federal Executive Institute. I detailed for a year at the HHS level helping with a Presidential Management Agenda Cross-Agency Priority Goal. These experiences allowed me to further hone my KSAs, especially in the area of leadership. In 2020 I moved to the role I am currently in now.

What are you most proud of in terms of your work at FDA?
Having had the ability to create and oversee programs and alliances that have improved the safety of FDA regulated products
 
What advice would you give to an FDA job seeker?
Keep an open mind. FDA is a large organization with a broad scope of responsibilities; this provides FDA employees the opportunity to discover and transition in a variety of careers within the organization. Getting your foot in the door in one position of which you're qualified to serve may later open doors to other positions that can continue to advance your professional goals.

Exercising, reading, community volunteering, traveling, trying new foods, enjoying the arts
