FDA's Center for Veterinary Medicine (CVM) regulates animal drugs, animal devices and animal food under the Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act. CVM protects and promotes the health of humans and animals by ensuring the safety of the American food supply, the safety of animal food and devices, and the safety and effectiveness of animal drugs.

Each FDA-TRACK program area collects, analyzes, and reports performance measures and results. Explore the progress CVM is making towards its key initiatives below:

Center for Veterinary Medicine Key Initiatives

Animal Food Safety

The goal of this initiative is to promote and protect human and animal health by preventing animal food safety problems.

Antimicrobial Stewardship in Veterinary Settings

The goal of this initiative is to foster the judicious use of medically important antimicrobials in animals to slow the development of antimicrobial resistance.

Post-market Drug Safety, Effectiveness, and Quality

The goal of this initiative is to implement a full lifecycle approach in evaluating marketed FDA-approved animal drugs, including animal drugs used in medicated feed, for safety, effectiveness, and quality.

Pre-market Animal Drug Review

The goal of this initiative is to improve access to safe and effective animal drug products.

Emerging Technologies

Animal Drug User Fee Performance Dashboard

The Animal Drug User Fee Act (ADUFA) authorizes FDA (specifically the Center for Veterinary Medicine) to assess and collect fees for new animal drug products. ADUFA provides FDA with resources to enhance the performance and predictability of the new animal drug review process, resulting in the approval of safe and effective animal drug products.

Animal Generic Drug User Fee Performance Dashboard

The Animal Generic Drug User Fee Act (AGDUFA) authorizes FDA (specifically the Center for Veterinary Medicine) to assess and collect fees for generic new animal drug products. AGDUFA provides FDA with resources to enhance the performance and predictability of the generic new animal drug review process, resulting in the approval of safe and effective animal drug products.
