FDA Asks Reagan-Udall Foundation to Gather Stakeholder Feedback About Collection of Antimicrobial-Use Data in Food Animals

December 2, 2021

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s Center for Veterinary Medicine (CVM) has asked the Reagan-Udall Foundation for the FDA to seek input from a variety of affected stakeholders about strategies for collecting data regarding antimicrobial use in food-producing animals. This project is an important opportunity to consider strategies for collaboration between the public and private sectors. CVM hopes that through this stakeholder dialogue, it can learn about capabilities and challenges facing the veterinary, agricultural, and public health communities when it comes to collecting and sharing antimicrobial-use data.

CVM currently collects data on the annual sales and distribution of antimicrobials intended for use in food-producing animals and tracks resistance trends captured by the National Antimicrobial Resistance Monitoring System (NARMS). While these data are informative, more specific data are needed on how antimicrobials are used on farms. These data are valuable for guiding the implementation of on-farm antimicrobial stewardship plans and informing future strategies to curb the development of antimicrobial resistance.

The Reagan-Udall Foundation for the FDA, on behalf of CVM, will soon begin to contact representatives from animal agriculture, veterinary, and public health organizations, as well as other key stakeholders. While the focus of this effort is to gather input from stakeholders who generate data related to antimicrobial use in food-producing animals, other interested stakeholders will be able to provide input. If you have questions or would like additional information about participating in this project, please visit https://reaganudall.org/programs/antimicrobial-use-data-food-animals and follow the instructions for contacting the Foundation.

Based on the input received during the stakeholder engagement, the Foundation will publish a report and host a public webinar in spring 2022 to present its findings. In addition, CVM expects to open a public docket to receive further public comment on the report.
