Veterinary Laboratory Investigation and Response Network (Vet-LIRN)

Biography

Andriy Tkachenko received his bachelor’s degree in 1997 from the National Agricultural University, Ukraine, where he examined the behavior of radioactive strontium and cesium in the plant-soil system. In 2002, he received his master’s degree from the University of Manchester, United Kingdom jointly with the Central European University, Hungary, where he investigated the behavior and toxicity of metals in aquatic animals. In 2010, he earned his PhD from the University of Maryland Eastern Shore, where he characterized the susceptibility of aquatic animals to environmental stressors and diseases using chemical and biochemical approaches in combination with analytical equipment.

Dr. Tkachenko joined FDA in 2010 as an Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU) fellow, working primarily on setting up analytical instrumentation for the newly established Veterinary Laboratory Investigation and Response Network (Vet-LIRN). Dr. Tkachenko performs chemical analysis of research and investigational samples. In 2016, Dr. Tkachenko became a physical scientist for the Vet-LIRN program office.

Research

As a physical scientist, Dr. Tkachenko (i) coordinates communications between Vet-LIRN chemistry Collaborative Agreement Program (chem-CAP) funded laboratories and the Vet-LIRN program office; (ii) provides technical assistance, advice, and guidance in development and validation of chemistry methods by chem-CAP laboratories according to FDA Guidelines, International Standard Organization (ISO) and Association of Official Analytical Chemists (AOAC) documents; (iii) reviews results and reports on progress of chem-CAP laboratory method validation projects; (iv) designs, organizes, conducts, and evaluates method testing exercises called Blinded Method Tests (BMTs) for individual chem-CAP laboratory projects, and (v) assists in designing, organizing, and conducting activities including evaluation of results under the Proficiency Test program for Vet-LIRN Network Laboratories in collaboration with the Moffett Campus, FDA.
