Biography

Dr. Daniel Tadesse is a research microbiologist in the Division of Animal and Food Microbiology at the Office of Research. He received his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree from Addis Ababa University, Ethiopia in 2000 and his PhD from the Ohio State University in 2009. His work is focused on understanding the effect of antimicrobial selective pressure on microbiome and resistomes, and application of metagenomics approach for cataloguing the full complement of resistance genes along the ‘farm to fork’ continuum to facilitate public health management decisions aimed at reducing the source and exposure routes of antimicrobial resistance to humans.

Research

  • Studying the effect of antimicrobials on gut microbiota and its subsequent effect on shaping the reservoirs of antibiotic resistance genes (resistomes) accessible to pathogens along the ‘farm to fork’ continuum.
  • Metagenomics approach for One Health resistance monitoring.
  • Mapping the microbiomes and resistomes of food animals and animal products.
