Biography

Dr. Gregory Tyson is a research microbiologist in the Division of Animal and Food Microbiology (DAFM). He received his PhD in microbiology from Northwestern University and joined the FDA in 2014. His research primarily supports the National Antimicrobial Resistance Monitoring System (NARMS), which performs One Health antimicrobial resistance surveillance of foodborne pathogens.

Research

Dr. Tyson’s research focuses on several areas, including

  • Using next-generation sequencing to understand antimicrobial resistance of foodborne pathogens such as Salmonella, E. coli, Campylobacter, and Enterococcus
  • Tracking emerging antimicrobial resistance to drugs of human health importance
  • Source attribution of human and animal illnesses caused by resistant pathogens
