About the Presentation

This lecture covered the consequences of sex differences in hypertension and associated disease, including the impact of one's sex on incidence, prevalence, disease progression and response to treatment. This lecture also explored the mechanisms underlying sex differences in hypertension and associated disease, providing an overview of what we know and what we don’t know. The causes of sex differences in hypertension and associated disease, such as gonadal hormone and sex chromosome effects, was also discussed.

About the Presenter

Kathryn Sandberg, PhD is Professor and Vice Chair for Research in the Department of Medicine and the founding director of the Center for the Study of Sex Differences in Health, Aging and Disease. She has published extensively on the impact of one’s sex including gonadal steroid and sex chromosome effects on hypertension and associated diseases. She has been continuously funded by the NIH since 1996 and has received prestigious awards and lectureships including the Established Investigator and Harriet Dustan Awards from the American Heart Association and the Ernest Starling Distinguished Lecture from the American Physiological Society. Dr. Sandberg has served in leadership roles in numerous scientific organizations including as founding President of the Organization for the Study of Sex Differences. She was Associate Editor for Gender Medicine, North American, Editor for Cell Biology International, and Section Editor for sex-based biology in the Journal of Women’s Health.
