We strongly encourage individuals with diverse educational interests, such as law, chemistry, engineering, biostatistics, pharmacy, public health, public policy, to apply. We offer a limited number of unpaid internships. As a CTP intern, you can expect to work on substantive projects, develop additional professional skills, improve research skills, and benefit from the personal attention of a mentor.

CTP Overview

CTP is responsible for carrying out the Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act, which Congress passed in 2009. This law – commonly called the Tobacco Control Act – gives us broad authority to regulate the manufacturing, distribution, and marketing of tobacco products. CTP is comprised of six different offices:

• Office of Science: Develops, evaluates and applies the science that informs and supports the regulatory and other public health goals and objectives of CTP.
• Office of Regulations: Leads and coordinates the development of high-quality regulatory and policy documents to advance the mission of CTP.
• Office of Health Communication and Education: Leads comprehensive communication and outreach for CTP to reduce the public health burden of tobacco use in the United States.
• Office of Management: Provides objective and accurate information and guidance on human capital, information technology, financial management, acquisitions, analysis, and logistical services to enhance operations and support the public health goals and objectives of CTP.
• Office of Compliance and Enforcement: Advises the CTP Director and Agency officials on legal, administrative, and regulatory programs and policies relating to tobacco products.
• Office of the Center Director: Provides scientific, policy and managerial leadership and direction to the five offices that constitute CTP.

How To Apply For An Internship

To apply for an internship, you must submit:

• A cover letter expressing your interest in working for the Center for Tobacco Products, including your preference for an Office if you have one
• A current resume
• Expected date of graduation
• The names of three references including name, title, relationship to applicant, telephone number, and email address of each reference

Minimum Intern Qualifications

Before the first day of your internship, if selected, you must:

• Be a U.S. citizen, or national, or lawfully admitted to the United States as a permanent resident or otherwise authorized to be employed.
• Be a current undergraduate or graduate student attending a college or university or have recently graduated (within 3 months) of the start of the internship.
• Have completed at least 2 years (four full semesters) of college or university education.
• Be at least 18 years of age.
• Be in good academic standing as determined by the academic institution.

Interview Process

• CTP has a limited number of internships and we are unable to interview all applicants.
• Applicants who submit the above required documents and meet the minimum qualifications will be considered for an interview; we will notify you if you are selected for an interview.
• We may ask for additional information or documentation before or after the interview.

Selection Process

Interns will be selected based on the application, interview, and demonstrated interest in public service. The documents and factors considered may include:

• Resume
• Cover letter
• Academic excellence
• Reference recommendation
• Evidence of the skills needed to work with the FDA Center for Tobacco Products
• Personal and professional maturity
•  The candidate’s potential contribution to the Center for Tobacco Products and FDA
• The anticipated benefits for the candidate

Upon acceptance, candidates must consent to the following:

• Undergoing security clearance review prior to the anticipated start date, including fingerprinting and background checks
• Potential random drug test

If the security clearance and background check reveal information that requires CTP to cancel the internship offer, we will convey this prior to the anticipated start date.
