Background:

Ushering in its third year, the FDA Oncology Center of Excellence (OCE) presents the “Conversations on Cancer: National Black Family Cancer Awareness Week, Engaging the Generations” public panel discussion. This online panel discussion kicks off the official start of National Black Family Cancer Awareness Week, June 15-21, 2023, which begins annually on Thursday before the Federal Juneteenth Holiday. The mission is to increase cancer awareness, increase cancer equity, reduce morbidity and mortality, and prevent unnecessary cancer burden on families in the most vulnerable populations. The official social media moniker is #BlackFamCan.

OCE Project Community leads both the social media campaign #BlackFamCan and the Conversation on Cancer discussion. OCE is engaging cancer advocacy groups, patients, social and community organizers, Historically Black Colleges and Universities, public and private cancer organizations, faith-based organizations, NCI-designated Cancer Centers, families and friends. OCE’s Project Community is keenly interested in including members of all US communities in this dialogue.

Nearly 10 million Americans missed cancer screenings in the US as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic and recent publications reveal screening prevalence for cancer continues to be lower than the pre-pandemic levels. The 2023 Conversations on Cancer: National Black Family Cancer Awareness Week public panel discussion will focus on rectifying this gap and more:

• Engaging the generations regarding cancer prevention and screening
• Emphasizing the importance of screening health systems outreach
• Decreasing the impact of preventable cancers
• Supporting patients and caregivers
• Increasing clinical trial enrollment
• Understanding and addressing environmental exposure
• Bringing cutting edge research through the pipeline to patients and communities

#BlackFamCan also aligns with the Cancer Moonshot goals to reduce cancer death rates by at least 50% over the next 25 years and improve the experience of living with and surviving cancer. National Black Family Cancer Awareness Week initiated in 2021 in conjunction with Presidential Executive Order 13985, “Advancing Racial Equity and Support for Underserved Communities Through the Federal Government.” The “Conversations on Cancer: National Black Family Cancer Awareness Week, Engaging the Generations” public panel discussion is free to the public with advanced registration.
