Background

Dr. Seongwon Nho graduated with a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from Gyeongsang National University, South Korea. Dr. Nho then earned a Ph.D. in veterinary medicine from Gyeongsang National University. In graduate school he studied proteomic response to infection in teleost fish and genome analysis of pathogens. He then trained at Mississippi State University as a postdoctoral fellow. He joined the Division of Microbiology at FDA’s National Center for Toxicological Research (NCTR) as an Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE) research fellow and has worked as a staff fellow in the same division since 2020. Dr. Nho received the FDA Leveraging Collaboration Award in 2019.

Research Interests   

Dr. Nho is experienced in biology techniques such as next generation sequencing, polymerase chain reaction usage, gene cloning and expression, electron microscopes, mass spectrometry, plaque assay, immunofluorescence assay, cell culture, and bioinformatics analysis. Dr. Nho’s current studies are focused on severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). Dr. Nho and his colleague generated recombinant SARS-CoV-2 spike glycoprotein reagents to study cell interactions and antibody-dependent enhancement. He and his colleague also are investigating the interaction between virus and host cells by generated pseudovirus expressing S, N, E, M, NSPs of SARS-CoV-2. He also seeks to understand calcium signaling that impacts the SARS-CoV-2 mediated cardiotoxicity.
