A: If you are 16-17 years old, yes, you may now receive a booster dose. The FDA amended the emergency use authorization for the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 Vaccine to allow for the use of a single booster dose for administration to individuals 16 or 17 years of age following completion of primary vaccination with the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 Vaccine.

If you are 18 years of age or older and received the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 Vaccine, Moderna COVID-19 Vaccine or Comirnaty (COVID-19 Vaccine, mRNA) for your primary vaccination series at least 6 months ago, then you may receive a booster dose of any of the currently available COVID-19 vaccines:

  • Moderna COVID-19 Vaccine
  • Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 Vaccine
  • Comirnaty (COVID-19 Vaccine, mRNA)
  • Janssen (J&J) COVID-19 Vaccine

If you are 18 years of age or older and received the Janssen (J&J) COVID-19 Vaccine as your primary vaccination at least 2 months ago, then you may receive a booster dose of any of the  currently available COVID-19 vaccines:

  • Moderna COVID-19 Vaccine
  • Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 Vaccine
  • Comirnaty (COVID-19 Vaccine, mRNA)
  • Janssen (J&J) COVID-19 Vaccine

The FDA-authorized Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 Vaccine and the FDA-approved Comirnaty (COVID-19 Vaccine, mRNA) are the only COVID-19 vaccines currently available for the 16- and 17-year-old age group. Individuals who are 16 and 17 years of age should only receive the Pfizer-BioNTech Vaccine or Comirnaty as their booster dose.

The FDA-approved Comirnaty (COVID-19 Vaccine, mRNA) and the two EUA authorized formulations of Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 Vaccine for ages 12 years and older, when prepared according to their respective instructions for use, can be used interchangeably without presenting any safety or effectiveness concerns.
