The U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s Center for Veterinary Medicine is announcing two Fiscal Year (FY) 2022 funding opportunities which could provide up to $800,000 in support of antimicrobial stewardship in veterinary settings and reducing antimicrobial resistance in animal agriculture. 

For the first grant opportunity, between February 1, 2022 and April 1, 2022, the FDA will accept research applications to help identify potential alternative practices for reducing the reliance on antimicrobial drugs for addressing the health needs of food-producing animals. This program may fund up to $500,000 total in FY 2022, which may be divided between no more than five awardees. This program will accept new applications February-April 2023 and 2024.

For the second grant opportunity, between March 1, 2022 and May 2, 2022, the FDA will accept applications for developing educational strategies for disseminating information on antimicrobial resistance and on implementing antimicrobial stewardship practices in food-producing animals. This grant program may fund up to $300,000 total in FY 2022, which may be divided between no more than three awardees. This program will accept new applications March-May 2023 and 2024.

For both opportunities, the number of awards is contingent upon FDA funding availability and the number of suitable applications. Future funding for both programs may be available for up to four additional years based on annual appropriations, availability of funds, and satisfactory recipient performance.

These grant programs are intended to build upon the FDA’s initiatives to support antimicrobial stewardship in veterinary settings and expand stakeholder engagement. The programs advance the agency’s goal to slow the development of antimicrobial resistance and preserve the effectiveness of antimicrobials through good antimicrobial stewardship practices in veterinary settings.
