Who We Are

The mission of the Reasonable Accommodation Office is to manage compliance with federal laws and ensure reasonable accommodations are provided to qualified individuals with disabilities who are applicants or employees.

Reasonable accommodation services ensure that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration is a workplace where applicants and employees who are qualified individuals with disabilities, enjoy equal employment opportunity and the benefits of employment as set forth in:

  • The U.S. Food and Drug Administration policy and procedures Manual for Providing Reasonable Accommodation for Individuals with Disabilities,
  • The Americans with Disabilities Act Amendment Act of 2008 (ADAAA),
  • The Rehabilitation Act of 1973 as amended, and
  • The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) guidance and related regulations

In addition, the Reasonable Accommodation Office also provides:

Sign Language Interpreting and captioning (Communication Access Real-Time Translation, i.e. CART) services provide reasonable accommodation which may be required by employees, applicants and visitors who are deaf or hard of hearing wanting to participate equally in the workplace to perform their day-to-day job functions or enjoy equal benefits of employment.

Pursuant to the amendment to the regulations implementing Section 501 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, requiring the provision of Personal Assistant Services (PAS), PAS provides assistance with performing activities of daily living that an individual would typically perform if he or she did not have a disability, and that is not otherwise required as a reasonable accommodation. Examples include: assistance with removing and putting on clothing, eating, and using the restroom.​​​​​​
