Dr. Beethika Khan joined the FDA in December 2020 as the Associate Commissioner for Economics and Analysis and the Director of the Office of Economics and Analysis (OEA). She leads OEA in developing all regulatory impact analysis for FDA’s rulemaking; evaluating and analyzing other public health initiatives and policy; and managing FDA’s engagements with the Government Accountability Office and the Office of Inspector General.

Prior to joining the FDA, Dr. Khan was a program director at the National Science Foundation’s (NSF’s) National Center for Science and Engineering Statistics. In this role, she led the production of policy-relevant government reports including the congressionally mandated Science and Engineering Indicators (S&E Indicators) report. This report provides comprehensive information on the health of the U.S. science, technology, and innovation enterprise in an international context. In this role, Dr. Khan also led and implemented a complete redesign of S&E Indicators, to transform it from a biennial, encyclopedic report to a series of focused reports published on a rolling basis, meeting a variety of stakeholder needs. Leading this redesign involved working across NSF including NSF’s governing body, the National Science Board, as well as external stakeholders and high-level policy bodies. 

Dr. Khan is a graduate of NSF’s Executive Leadership Development Program as part of which she completed a detail as a Senior Advisor to the Provost at Georgetown University. Her earlier career includes serving as a supervisory economist and a senior economist at the U.S. Department of Commerce, and as an assistant economist at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York.  

Dr. Khan received her Ph.D. in economics from the University of California, Berkeley, and a Bachelor of Science degree, also in economics, from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
