Major Initiatives, Programs, and Projects

To bring us closer to achieving the vision of an integrated food safety system, FDA manages a collection of initiatives, programs and projects.  Listed below are several of these organized into four main areas: Information and Data Exchange; Operational Support; Regulatory Standards and Policy; and Strategic Partnerships.  These coordinated efforts with our strategic partners bring FDA closer to its regulatory mission of public health protection including reducing the risk of foodborne illnesses.  A full roadmap of major activities accomplished and planned that have or will support the progress is also available.

Organizations

• Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO) is a voluntary membership association of local, state and federal agencies charged by their local, state or federal laws to regulate the sale and distribution of animal feeds and animal drug remedies. 
• Association of Food and Drug Officials (AFDO) is a regulatory organization that connects food and medical products safety stakeholders and impacts the regulatory environment by shaping sound science-based rules, laws, regulations and sharing best practices that protect public health. 
• Association of Public Health Laboratories (APHL) an association that works to strengthen laboratory systems serving the public’s health in the U.S. and globallly\
• Association of State and Territorial Health Officials (ASTHO) is the national nonprofit organization representing public health agencies in the United States, the U.S. Territories, and the District of Columbia, and over 100,000 public health professionals these agencies employ
• Conference for Food Protection (CFP) is a non-profit organization created to provide a formal process whereby members of industry, regulatory, academia, consumer, and professional organizations are afforded equal input in the development and/or modification of food safety guidance
• Council of State and Territorial Epidemiologists (CSTE) is an organization of member states and territories representing public health epidemiologists that works to establish more effective relationships among state and other health agencies
• International Food Protection Training Institute (IFPTI) is a training organization that builds competency-based solutions for public and private-sector food protection professionals which are then used for custom-designed training organized around curriculum frameworks aligned with specific workforce competencies
• National Association of County and City Health Officials (NACCHO) represents county and city health officials organized to improve the health of communities by strengthening and advocating for local health departments
• National Association of Local Boards of Health (NALBOH) informs, guides, and is the national voice for boards of health. In today’s public health system, the leadership role of boards of health makes them an essential link between public health services and a healthy community.
• National Association of State Departments of Agriculture (NASDA) is a nonpartisan, nonprofit association which represents the elected and appointed commissioners, secretaries, and directors of the departments of agriculture in all fifty states and four U.S. territories 
• National Conference on Interstate Milk Shipments (NCIMS) a non-profit organization made up of persons involved in the dairy industry, from the dairy farmer, to processing plant personnel, to those persons involved in inspecting the dairy farmer’s operation and/or the processing plant, to those persons who make the laws concerning the inspections, enforce the laws, to the academic researcher and adviser, and the consumer of the dairy products
• National Egg Regulatory Officials (NERO) consists of State Departments of Agriculture officials involved in the shell egg and egg products regulations and programs, with affiliate members who have an interest in these programs 
• National Environmental Health Association (NEHA) is a professional society organized to advance the environmental health and protection professional for the purpose of providing a healthful environment for all 
• National Shellfish Sanitation Program (NSSP) is the federal/state cooperative program recognized by FDA and the Interstate Shellfish Sanitation Conference (ISSC) for the sanitary control of shellfish produced and sold for human consumption
• Partnership for Food Protection (PFP) is a group of dedicated officials from federal, state, and local government with roles in protecting the food supply
