Mammography Facility Adverse Event and Action Report – October 2, 2019: Medical Associates of Brownsville, PA

Background

As part of the Mammography Quality Standards Act (MQSA), Congress mandated that there be annual reporting of adverse actions taken against mammography facilities. Congress stipulated that the report be made available to physicians and the general public and that it should include information that is useful in evaluating the performance of mammography facilities nationwide. In order to provide this information in the timeliest manner, we now post the following information in “real time,” as actions taken against mammography facilities are concluded.

Mammography Facility Against Which There Was An Adverse Action

Facility Name and Address:

Medical Associates of Brownsville, PA
425 East Los Ebanos Boulevard
Suite 100-A
Brownsville, TX 78520

Facility ID Number:

236598

Adverse Event:

On January 11, 2019, the State of Texas Accreditation Body (STX AB) initiated an Additional Mammography Review (AMR) of mammograms performed by this facility due to deficiencies noted during the inspection performed on January 10, 2019.

On February 8, 2019, STX AB notified the State of Texas Certification Agency (STX CA) that the AMR revealed serious deficiencies in clinical image quality. The images reviewed by the STX AB did not meet its clinical image evaluation criteria, and the STX AB believed the deficiencies posed a serious risk to human health.

Action Taken:

On February 14, 2019, the STX AB suspended the facility’s accreditation. The STX CA suspended the facility’s certificate.

Corrective Action:

Based on the serious image quality deficiencies noted during the AMR, the STX CA required the facility to perform a Patient and Referring Healthcare Provider Notification (PPN) to alert all at-risk patients and their providers of the mammography quality problems at the facility.

The facility successfully completed the PPN action and was notified of such by the STX CA on August 16, 2019.

Status of the Facility:

The facility is currently not performing mammography.
