About the FDA Office of Minority Health and Health Equity's Research and Collaboration
- Reduce health disparities by advancing minority health-focused research, education, and scientific exchanges
- Study medical conditions that disproportionately affect racial and ethnic subgroups
- Analyze data sets that address FDA concerns or questions
- Study human genetic variation in susceptibility and severity of medical conditions
- Conduct usability testing among racial and ethnic subgroups and/or their providers to determine their comprehension of FDA communications
Research studies under this program provide insight into the scientific basis for individual therapies. Studies also provide future directions for research and aid regulatory decision-making. This program includes:
- OMHHE Challenge Grants that support FDA researchers
- Centers of Excellence in Regulatory Science and Innovation (CERSIs) that support extramural researchers at these centers
FDA Office of Minority Health and Health Equity Research Fellows
OMHHE supports a limited number of research fellows at various academic institutions through existing Memorandums of Understanding (MOUs) or newly established MOUs with FDA.
A MOU is the basis for developing scientific collaborations, outreach and education initiatives, and intellectual partnerships. Research fellowships are funded and administered through a joint program with the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE).

Pharmacy Student Rotations
OMHHE participates in FDA Pharmacy Student Experiential Program, where students learn how FDA addresses public health issues involving drugs, biologics, and medical devices. Pharmacy students on rotation have the opportunity to:
- Attend FDA advisory committee hearings, congressional hearings, and monthly lectures
- Learn about FDA operations
- Interact with pharmacy students from schools across the country
- Learn about government pharmacist career opportunities
Students also learn about regulatory efforts to address health disparities and minority health by completing a designated project.
