The FDA Grand Rounds is an educational presentation that is webcast monthly to highlight cutting-edge research underway across the Agency and its impact on protecting and advancing public health. Each session features an FDA scientist presenting on a key public health challenge and how FDA is applying science to its regulatory activities. Dr. Michael Schmitt is a Principal Investigator and Lab Chief in the Laboratory of Respiratory and Special Pathogens, Division of Bacterial, Parasitic, and Allergenic Products in the Office of Vaccines Research & Review.
Dr. Schmitt’s current research is involved in the identification of new vaccine candidates for the bacterial pathogen Corynebacterium diphtheriae; with a focus on surface factors that are required for the acquisition of host-iron sources.
Before joining CBER in 1995, Dr. Schmitt was a Postdoctoral Fellow in the Department of Microbiology at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in Bethesda, MD. He received his Ph.D. in Microbiology at The University of Texas at Austin.
