About the Speaker

Peter (Seongjae) Kim, Ph.D.
Staff Fellow
National Center for Toxicological Research (NCTR)
U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA)

Dr. Peter (Seongjae) Kim is a research microbiologist at the FDA’s National Center for Toxicological Research (NCTR). Dr. Kim has been involved in environmental biotechnology, food safety, intestinal microbiome and host interaction projects. Dr. Kim is currently collaborating with the FDA’s Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition (CFSAN) to survey whether tattoo inks and permanent makeup inks are contaminated with microorganisms, including pathogenic nontuberculous mycobacteria.

About the Presentation

Tattooing and the use of permanent makeup (PMU) inks have dramatically increased over the last decade. With the rise of permanent makeup inks, there has been an increase in tattoo-associated human adverse reactions, including those due to microbial infection. This presentation will provide an overview of NCTR studies showing that tattoo inks, commercially available in the United States, are often contaminated with microorganisms.

Learning Objectives

1. Describe the research approaches conducted by NCTR to monitor the safety of tattoo inks.
2. Discuss the research findings from an FDA study of tattoo inks, PMU inks, microblading inks, and ink diluents.
