Data Element Information
Rationale for Separate Consideration | Oxygen delivery device is distinct from inhaled oxygen concentration. Additionally, inhaled oxygen concentration is usually only recorded when patients are on more 'advanced' devices such as Ventilators or BIPAP. |
Use Case Description(s)
Use Case Description | These would be helpful in understanding the respiratory status of all patients. For example, a patient with an oxygen saturation of 97% on Room Air has a very different respiratory status from a patient with an oxygen saturation of 97% on 6 L/minute of supplemental oxygen via nasal cannula, but that difference is not captured in USCDI currently. |
Estimate the breadth of applicability of the use case(s) for this data element | Nearly all admitted patients and many outpatients have these data elements recorded in the EMR vital signs/flowsheets. |

Oxygen delivery device
Description
In addition to respiratory rate, pulse oxygen saturation and inhaled oxygen concentration, the method of oxygen delivery should also be specified. Common methods include 'Nasal Cannula', 'Face Mask', 'Non-rebreather Mask', 'High Flow Nasal Cannula', 'BIPAP', 'CPAP' and 'Ventilator'. This would provide critical additional context to understanding a patient's respiratory status, especially in light of the COVID-19 pandemic which predominantly causes illness with pneumonia. This data element is often recorded in the electronic medical record by nursing and thus available. |
