Children & Youth with Special Health Care Needs

Providing families support via resources and links to community services including family support, care coordination and health information.

Program Overview

The Children and Youth with Special Health Care Needs (CYSHCN) program at Spokane Regional Health District serves children, birth to 18 years, who have, or who are at risk of developing, serious chronic physical, developmental, behavioral, or emotional conditions.

Program staff assist families in learning about and connecting with parent organizations, support groups, financial resources, and educational resources regarding the child’s medical condition and special needs.

If the family meets financial and other program eligibility requirements, CYSHCN staff may be able to assist families in obtaining financial assistance for needed services and equipment.

Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs)

Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs)

ACES are significant incidents during childhood which can result in harm to social, cognitive and emotional functioning. Resulting changes in brain development can affect a child’s learning ability and social skills, as well as impact long-term adult health outcomes and quality of life. Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

Autism can be diagnosed as early as age two. Early diagnosis is very important. If you have a concern about your child’s behavior or development, speak with your health care provider.

The CYSHCN program is supported with federal funding from the Maternal Child Health Block Grant, Washington State Department of Health and local funding. CYSHCN staff work with community and statewide agencies to support children and families in need of services. CYSHCN staff participate in a statewide Children and Youth with Special Health Care Needs Council.

Locally, staff participate in the County Interagency Coordinating Council (CICC) with goals to evaluate and continuously improve services. Membership includes parents, healthcare professionals, early education providers, and advocates.
