The School Health and Safety program at Spokane Regional Health District provides schools - kindergarten through 12th grade - with:
Environmental health in schools is important to educational success and overall well-being. Poor conditions can interfere with academic progress as they are distracting, can cause preventable absences and divert school funds to pay for repair and remediation projects.
The program is staffed by inspectors and a technical advisor, along with clerical and management support.
It is worth noting that other health district programs are also involved with
schools. For example, the Food Safety program inspects school kitchens and
special school events where food is served.
Fees are charged for School Health and Safety program activities such as inspections, re-inspections, and construction review. There is no charge for the health district to respond to a complaint, illness investigation, or need for consultation. The program is additionally supported by general fund dollars, i.e., state-allocated dollars and contributions from Spokane County.
